I am pleased to report that we have recently received additional
tuition
assistance funding for the Youth Academy of Excellence. This
funding is
available for the Middle School program the week of July 14-18.
Three
courses are available: Artistic Algebra in Action, Adventures in
Paleontology, and Raise Your Voice [writing]. The cost of each
course
is $240 plus a $55 special fee. The funding is available for
students
who are on the Federal free and reduced school lunch program or
those
with families of moderate incomes who have some extenuating
circumstance. We ask that applicants pay a portion of the
special fee.

YAE: Raise Your Voice! (Grade 8-10) ( YEYAE 210 )
Youth Academy of Excellence: Join us for a writing class that
explores all the different possibilities for letting your voice
be heard! In this class you'll discover fun and safe ways to
enter the world of 'blogging', publish a class magazine, write
letters to the editor and discover many more avenues for finding
audiences for your teen age voice. We'll look at the role writing
plays in the workplace and sharpen your own creative and
persuasive writing skills. It's a week designed for you to
explore many different writing genres, rub shoulders with other
young writers, and give you a chance to raise your writer's
voice! ***Note to parents: The 'blog' we create as part of this
class will be a private 'blog' monitored carefully by the
instructor and only accessible to the members of our YAE class.
Internet safety will be taught and enforced as students learn to
use this great internet tool for writers.
Instructor: CARRIE FINLINSON
Carrie loves helping her students discover themselves through
writing. She was voted Millcreek Junior High School's teacher of
the year and was trained in the National Writing Project through
Utah State University. She graduated from Brigham Young
University with a B.A. in English and currently is a candidate
for a Master's Degree in Secondary and Gifted and Talented
Education at Utah State University.
YAE: Artistic Algebra in Action (Gr 8-10) ( YEYAE 251 )
Youth Academy of Excellence: Do you love math? Are you creative?
Do you learn by doing? Discover the magic of manipulating
mathematical equations. Become part of a dynamic human graph.
Transform lines, parabolas, circles, ellipses, cubic functions
(and more!) into your own drawings on graphing calculators.
Explore your creativity by learning how to use The Geometer's
Sketchpad - computer software that lets you color, create,
reflect, transform, and imagine new possibilities in mathematical
ways. Delve deeply into the connections between math, technology
and art. The week will culminate with an art show of students'
work. (Calculators and computers will be provided.)
Instructor: NANCY ROBINSON
Nancy taught math for ten years at Rowland Hall - St. Marks. She
has a M.A. from Stanford, studying her junior year at Magdalen
College, Oxford University, England and further focused on math
education at the University of Utah and thru advanced training.
Nancy has also been a guide, curriculum developer and trip leader
for many adventure and research trips with a focus on
experiential learning.
YAE: Adventures in Paleontology (Gr 8-10) ( YEYAE 300 )
Youth Academy of Excellence: Could we ever build a real 'Jurassic
Park'? Compare real paleontologists to their modern media
versions. Travel back in time to the Mesozoic era, when great
beasts roamed planet Earth! Learn about the incredible history
and biology of dinosaurs and other animals through hands-on
activities that simulate the work of actual paleontologists.
Would you be able to take bones and assemble them accurately? Go
behind the scenes into the world of paleontology and be prepared
to get your hands dirty!
Instructor: SHELIA CODY
Shelia is a science and math teacher at City Academy in Salt Lake
City. She has four years of college teaching and tutoring
experience in geological sciences and mathematics. She has two
years of experience teaching math and science to 7th through 12th
graders. Before teaching high school, she worked for nearly three
years as a geologist (petrologist) for a local geomechanical
engineering firm.
